It’s great to see that summer has arrived. I hope you are all enjoying the warm weather and are looking forward to the Christmas Break.
Junior Section Gear Return We are missing quite a large amount of gear including a number of black Cashmere Wanderers backpacks (issued to Division 1 and some Division 2 teams). If you have any Cashmere Wanderers playing tops, jackets or gear bags/backpacks at home, please return them to the Cashmere Club marked attention Fred Simpson, as soon as possible. Gear is one of our major expenditure items and we rely on players and parents to return gear to minimise the cost of replacement.
Registration Dates for 2009 Mark your calendar! The registration dates for next season will be on Sunday 22nd February and Wednesday 25th February 2009. Due to an increase in affiliation fees by an average of $14 per player, it is likely that player fees will increase for this coming season. The fees are still to be set but we should have these finalised by Christmas. Also note that you can register from 1st Febraury by going online to www.cashmerefootball.co.nz
The Bootman The Bootman, Adrian Mee, will be at registration on Sunday 22nd February. He always has a great range of second hand boots to trade at reasonable prices. He can be contacted on 981 6571 if you have any boots to sell.
Ferrymead Proposal Those of you that attended the Special General Meeting will know that our Club voted (by a narrow majority) in favour of the proposal to set up a new Club entity in conjunction with Ferrymead Bays. However, Ferrymead Bays members voted against it so there will be no further action on the proposal. Although this proposal didn't have a successful outcome, the process has identified areas where our Club can continue to improve and the Executive, Junior and Senior Committees are committed to moving the Club forward in a positive direction. Watch this space!
Committee The AGM was held on 27 November at which the 2009 Junior Club Committee members were elected. They are as follows:- Vice President – Caroline Mason Secretary – Barbara Turner Treasurer – Cathy Gabites Gear – Sharan Jones Results – Steve Burgham Newsletter – Fiona Spencer Inhouse Competition – Kerry Miller, Linda Fitzgerald/Rebecca Sunderland Database – Linda Fitzgerald/Cathy Gabites Junior Committee members elected to the Executive Andrew McWilliam and Sharan Jones
Club Fundraiser
Merry Christmas everybody, have a safe and happy holidays and we look forward to seeing you all in 2009
As the calendar year runs out we get closer to the start of the next winter season. I know a number of our players have been playing indoor football over the summer and many have been involved in our Development Programmes. Any time spent with a ball at your feet is good time, so well done I am sure you will show the benefits over the next season. Some, who have had other commitments or simply decided on taking a break might like to consider putting on the boots again shortly. We have a couple of options available to you and would encourage any player (boy or girl) to take advantage of opportunities that are not available to other clubs.
Holiday Programme After Christmas towards the end of the school holidays we will be running holiday programmes at Somerfield Park. The week starting the 19th of January is set aside for our younger players with the following week starting the 26th for the older ones. These will involve lots of time spent with a ball, including some games and technique sessions, with the main emphasis on “FUN”. You can find details of times and registration forms on our website. Please register early so we can ensure we have enough coaches on hand.
Development Programme and Trials Last season was an eye opener to many of our players involved in the Mainland competitive leagues, with the standard of competition a real challenge. Playing at the top level is meant to be a challenge and it is important you are well prepared. As a club it is and will continue to be our aim to put out our most competitive line ups in these competitions and to this end we want to make certain we offer the best preparation and select the best players. Selection for teams for 2009 has already started with last season’s performances and work already undertaken in our Development Programmes being taken into account. Our Development Programmes will resume straight after the holidays with final team selections to be made by early March. If you have ambitions of playing in a Cashmere 1st or 2nd Division team in 2009 then I suggest you look to attend a development session at least once a week. Some of the work has been very encouraging with players from lower divisions putting pressure on for places in higher ranked teams. In my experience it is not wise to rely on past performance for continued selection. Whilst you do nothing you can guarantee others are working on their game and looking to take over your position. Registration forms and session details are on the website, please contact me if you have any queries or problems. Dates for the official trials will be posted on our site in the New Year make certain you are ready. Criteria for selection are also posted on our site.
Changes, existing and new challenges for 2009 As we continue to grow as a club we have to face continuous challenges to ensure we are doing what is best for our members and meeting the requirements of our parent body.
In House Development competitions and Programmes As part of my role I have been reviewing our in-house competition and development programme over the last year and will be putting some fresh ideas to our club executive for the coming season. These ideas will be based on my wish to ensure that our younger players have the best possible introduction to a game that should become their “Game for Life”. I do not believe that there is any other sport that will give them the opportunities for lifelong involvement that ours can. Making certain that their formative years are enjoyable and productive is part of our challenge as a club and me in particular.
Mainland High Performance Grades Some of the requirements introduced to improve the level of the more competitive grades require the club to ensure that our entries are well resourced and supported. We are fortunate to have some very talented coaches at our disposal. We now need to ensure that they are well supported by their team of parents. As well as a qualified coach each of our Division 1 and 2 entries for 2009 must also have 2 qualified Match Officials and a Medic. Training for these roles will be made available by the club using the resources of Mainland Football. Full details will be posted in the New Year. If you have child playing at this level we must now ask that you consider increasing your involvement. Becoming a match official can be almost as satisfying as playing and First Aid training is something we should all have not only to cater for sporting accidents. As a club we will cover your costs in undertaking these important roles and you will have the satisfaction of the increased involvement in your child’s sporting life.
Funding & Sponsorship Funding and sponsorship is another issue that continuously challenges sporting clubs. With over 1000 members I am confident we are in a position to ease the burden by working together to support ourselves. It is an area that needs to be addressed across our membership. If you have any ideas or feel you have an opportunity to help in any way please do not hesitate to contact me. As parents of young families I am sure that your custom is vital to many local businesses that in turn may be able to show their appreciation of your support along with the potential value of the combined custom of our membership. For instance our in house programme based at Centennial Park brings together about 400 local youngsters and their families on one site every Saturday Morning. There must be a sponsor out there who would like to have the naming rights and business opportunity this group offer. Any ideas please ring me or drop a line any time.
Player Pathways and opportunities It is my hope that we may be able to improve and increase the opportunities for our junior and youth players whilst rewarding their loyalty to our club through some new initiatives involving playing opportunities away from our normal Canterbury based competitions. The opportunity to experience our sport in other parts of New Zealand and overseas is something that should be attractive to our members and an experience they should be keen to work towards. I would like to see such opportunities as regular features on our calendar starting in the next season or two. The current representative programmes for those over the age of 10 have not proved particularly successful for our club and players. It is an area that we must now address ourselves. More details will be posted in due course.
As this will be the last newsletter for the year may I close by wishing all our players, parents and supporters a safe and happy holiday. I will be taking a short break but will be on deck again from the 12th of January. In the mean time I will check my e-mails regularly and will be contactable on my cell phone 021 756 005 should you feel the need to speak to me. I look forward to working with and for you all again throughout 2009. Fred Simpson Football Development Manager
