Hi to all members,
Happy New Year to all our members and friends.
2012 will mark a significant period of change for us all. We leave behind
a year full of challenges unprecedented in our history. As we look back
there is much to be grateful for in a year littered with successes despite
Mother Nature’s attempts to challenge our resolve. In this newsletter we
take stock of some of our achievements as a club, take a brief look at our
new partners and share some of the exciting news of upcoming events in
2012. This is a new look newsletter which leads us into a new club with,
we hope, new scope for a better playing experience for everyone involved.

Canterbury Representative Coaches
We also provided 4 Canterbury Representative
Coaches. They were:
- Paul Morrow, Andrew McWilliam, Dietmar Dyck, Carlos de Frietis. Well
done to all of them on a stellar year.
2011 also saw the integration of Woolston Technical into our in house
junior competition. Thank you to everyone involved for making them feel so
welcome and creating such a successful program for our Primary School aged
players. That success has seen the precursor to an even bigger event. I
mean of course the formal merger of our two clubs as a new entity to be
known as Cashmere Technical Football Club. With the introduction of
Woolston Technical we welcome some of the best players and coaches to our
club and the exciting prospect of having teams at every level in the
Mainland women’s competitions.
ASB Park Opening
Some of our kids from 7th and 8th grade were involved in the opening of
the new ASB Park in Cranford Street last year. Here is the video kindly
supplied by Mainland Football.

Nike Cup
Last year our team went really well in our Regional competition and went
through to play in Wellington in this International Event run by
Manchester United. The winners of the National Competition went through to
play in Australia, the winner there going on to Old Trafford to compete in
the World Final. For our Under 15 players this is a fantastic opportunity
and as this will be the first ever Cashmere Tech team we hope to make a
big splash. Good luck to Fred & Carlos and all the boys!
Francis de Vries progresses to Pro Football Player
Francis de Vries has left us to pursue a professional contract with Basel
in Switzerland (if you don’t know, Basel are the side that knocked
Manchester United out of the UEFA Champions League just before Christmas).
Francis is keen to share his experiences as a professional footballer and
will be a regular contributor to our newsletter over the coming year. Here
are his thoughts after his first week.
“I have been training for one and a half weeks
now and it’s awesome. The standard is very, very high so I have to fight
for everything. I'm starting out from the bottom of the pile again which
is good because it means I will develop and learn a lot more than if I was
at the top. All the players here and very, very good, their technical and
tactical knowledge and execution of the game is exceptional. In training
at the moment we are focusing on fitness but doing it in game related
situations. We also do a lot of technical work, co ordination with a
ladder and such and a lot of core stability. The main difference here
compared to New Zealand is that you get a lot less time on the ball. So
you have to know where everyone around you is before you get the ball.
Also the players are used to this so it is hard to win the ball if you are
defending. Outside of football I had my first experience of a sponsor’s
event as a footballer. The whole U18s went for a night to an events center
sort of thing and we all helped to cook dinner for each other and our
sponsors (a Swiss bank). It was heaps of fun, I made the fish, and I'm
starting to fit in with the guys a lot better socially which is good!
We've played one game so far, against the U17s and won 4 1. I got 15
minutes off the bench (starting at the bottom of the pile) but it was just
awesome to put on the kit and yeah be part of everything! I will keep
working hard and keep you updated sometime next week!”
This is a big move for a 17 year old and a far cry from coaching 10th
grade at Cashmere Wanderers. We wish Francis great success.
A couple of other former Cashmere players are making some good inroads.
Greg Draper is riding the new high in Welsh football and is currently 2nd
top scorer in their top flight with 14 goals since September. His club New
Saints have also qualified for the Europa Cup. It’s great to see Greg
doing so well and hopefully we’ll see him in the NZ Olympic team in London
later in the year. Greg and the Oly Whites have qualifying matches in
March and will be hoping to make the finals as they did in Beijing.
Ryan Nelsen
Ryan Nelsen has recently been back home visiting with family and friends.
Ryan’s knee injury is on the mend and hopefully he can get back and help
Blackburn avoid relegation in the near future. Ryan is hoping to join the
All Whites for their World Cup qualifiers in June. The All Whites are due
to play next month in a one off International against Jamaica in Auckland.
Football Ferns
The Football Ferns are also in action in February. The will play the ever
powerful USA on the 11th then Northern Ireland, South Africa and South
Korea in the Cyprus Cup, hoping to extend their unbeaten run of 4 matches
since they knocked over Italy last February.
