SUMMARY
After a slow start to the first half of the season Cashmere Seniors main
objective was for a top 3 placing. The first 6 games of the season resulted with
a 2 win, 4 loss record, at that stage 7th place. An unlucky combination of a few
key players missing through injury and playing against top clubs in the early
stages. 2 more wins saw the completion of round 1, with a 4 win 4 loss ratio ,0
GD, and fifth place.
Round 2 game 1 was Burnside, top of the table. This was always going to be a
great measure for where the team was at. After leading early until the 80th
minute, the lads came away with a draw, though disappointed, a true reflection
of their status in the league. The entire 2nd round only saw 1 defeat and many
convincing victories, eventually finishing 3rd.
Many thanks to Ozzy for captaining the team for the season, and really
motivating the players week in and week out. Tim Bush for taking the trainings
and supporting the team, and Mike Wallace for coaching, selecting, managing, and
most importantly doing the washing. Thanks to the Cashmere Div4 team for their
support against North Canterbury at Beckenham Park. Teams dread coming to play
and see us having experienced, passionate, opinionated, constructive supporters
(with beers) CHEERS!!
Senior 1st XI Squad:
CWAFC in 3rd place:
The senior men’s 1st XI won another amazing game against Mid-Canterbury on
Saturday with the score being 6 – 1. Steve McRae opened up the impressive goal
total by stunning everyone with a driven shot into the top right hand corner –
pure class. This goal subsequently lead to the flood gates being opened. On the
goal tally Jason Wilson, Mike Wallace, James Agnew and Grant Ross (x2). The goal
of the day would have to go to Mike Wallace’s ‘experienced’ free kick from
outside the attacking ‘D’, slightly to the right hand side. With the wind
blowing in his favor he enforced his rank within the squad and took up a
shooting position. “Nothing but top right” screamed Danny Dowds before the ball
hit the back of the net! From where I was standing, overall a very pleasing game
to watch.
The second half of the season saw the players working hard in achieving a style
of football which suited them. It has been a frustrating road to travel down
this season with the weather effecting the training facilities and playing
conditions, losing to teams that effectively could have put the squad in a
better contention for 2nd place and losing a few players early on. But, all of
the squad has worked extremely hard for 3rd place and they deserve it 100%. As
the season progressed so did the squad, working as one unit rather than
individuals.
This season saw the rise of Phil Wylie the 1st XI captain. With his positive
attitude, striving for success in every training session and game and being a
natural leader, he was an excellent and essential part to the winning
combination. Game after game, Phil (Aka Aussie!) talked about what exactly
needed to be done and lead from example. A true sign of a leader.
With the 2006 season all over, the CWAFC players and coaches are looking for the
2007 season with much anticipation. There are some very talented, experienced
and young players coming through Cashmere at the moment, it will be an exciting
time to watch not only the senior 1st XI but also the rest of the club.
Once again thank you to all the of the CWAFC senior committee in supporting the
1st XI squad plus reserve team. Also I would like to say that thank to all the
players over this season that have put in the hard yards to excel and strive for
that position on the table, there is a lot of hard work coming up so rest up now
and I’ll see you shortly! I hope to see more young athletes down at our home
games supporting our 1st XI. It was great to see several young aspiring athletes
down on the game just been. I will see you all soon.
